How to Show, Hide & Manage PDF Layers (OCG)
PDF layers — formally called Optional Content Groups (OCG) — let a single document hold multiple sets of content that can be turned on or off. CAD drawings, maps, translated variants and review markups often use layers so readers can show just what they need. SwiftPDFLab’s Layers tool lets you inspect and control that visibility, and it runs client-side in your browser so your file is never uploaded.
Where Layers Live in SwiftPDFLab
Layer management is a standalone SwiftPDFLab tool on the main site — it is not a feature of the unified SwiftPDFLab Editor at editor.swiftpdflab.com. Use the dedicated Layers tool below to view and toggle optional content.
Step 1: Open the Layers Tool
Go to the PDF Layers tool and upload a PDF that contains optional content groups.
Step 2: Review the Detected Layers
The tool lists every layer (OCG) it finds in the document. If a PDF has no layers, the list will be empty — layers only exist if the file was authored with optional content.
Step 3: Show or Hide Layers
Toggle individual layers on or off to control what is visible. This is useful for isolating one set of content — for example hiding a markup layer to see the clean drawing underneath.
Step 4: Download the Result
Once the visibility is set the way you want it, download the PDF. Keep in mind that toggling visibility changes what is shown by default; the underlying optional content still exists in the file unless it is flattened or removed.
Pro Tip
Not every PDF uses layers — they are common in technical, CAD and cartographic documents but rare in ordinary reports. If you need a single flat version where hidden content is permanently baked in or discarded, follow up with a flatten or print-to-PDF step rather than relying on visibility toggles alone.
