How to Add Bookmarks & a Table of Contents to a PDF
Bookmarks (also called the document outline) are the navigable tree in a PDF reader’s sidebar — chapters, sections and sub-sections you can jump to in one click. A table of contents is the visible, usually clickable, contents page inside the document itself. SwiftPDFLab offers dedicated tools for both, and the Editor can add an outline too. All processing happens client-side in your browser.
Bookmarks vs. Table of Contents
Use bookmarks when you want sidebar navigation that does not add any visible page to the document. Use a table of contents when you want an actual contents page printed in the file, typically near the front. Many polished documents use both: an outline for on-screen navigation and a TOC page for print.
Option A: Add a Bookmark Outline
Open the Bookmark tool, upload your PDF, and create an entry for each section. Point each bookmark at its target page, and nest entries to build a hierarchy (for example, “Chapter 1” with “1.1” and “1.2” underneath). Download the PDF to save the outline.
Option B: Generate a Table of Contents
Open the Table of Contents tool, define the headings and their page numbers, and the tool inserts a clickable contents page into the document. Choose where the TOC page should appear, then download the result.
Option C: Add an Outline in the Editor
If you are already annotating or editing, open the document in the SwiftPDFLab Editor and add bookmarks to the outline from there, then download once you are done.
Pro Tip
Build the bookmark outline last, after page order is final. Adding, removing or reordering pages shifts targets, so structuring the outline once the document is settled saves you from re-pointing every bookmark.
